Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park staff release the animals into the wild. — Photo baotainguyenmoitruong.vnViet Nam News QUẢNG BÌNH — Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in the central province of Quảng Bình has released 11 rare animals back into the wild following attempts to rescue and rehabilitate them. The park’s rescue centre earlier this week released eight mammals and three reptiles into a jungle section of the park. The mammals included three pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leolina), two rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), two pigmy lorises (Nycticebus pygmaeus), and one stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides). These are listed as vulnerable and least concern species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The tortoises have been released into the wild. — Photo courtesy of Bạch Mã National ParkViet Nam News THỪA THIÊN-HUẾ — Bạch Mã National Park in the central province of Thừa Thiên-Huế has released five mammals and two reptiles back into the wild after rescuing and rehabilitating them. The rescue centre released two pig-tailed macaques, two feral pigs, one red-shanked douc and two rare tortoises. Some of the species are listed as endangered or vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s red list. Local residents living nearby the park handed the animals to the centre several days ago. Veterinary staff in the park have taken care and rehabilitated the animals before releasing them. According to the centre, education attempts have resulted in more wild animals being handed over to the park. Rare animals found in U Minh Ha national park
Ca Mau (VNA) – Deer, wild boar, otters, mongooses, monocle cobras and painted storks are among rare and valuable animals recently found in the U Minh Ha National Park, in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, according to the park’s management board. The park is an ideal place for researching wild animals, said Huynh Minh Nguyen, director of the U Minh Ha National Park. Scientific research conducted in 2010 revealed that the park was home to distinctive flora and fauna such as 32 mammal species and 74 bird species. The park is currently home to 700-800 heads of deer, hundreds of wild boar and a variety of precious birds like painted storks and pelicans. U Minh Ha National Park, covering Ca Mau province’s U Minh and Tran Van Thoi districts, has a total area of 8,500 hectares. New dragonfly species discovered in Vietnam
VietNamNet Bridge - The Wildlife At Risk (WAR), on April 19, announced that Vietnamese scientists have discovered a new dragonfly species in Vietnam. The male and female aethriamanta aethra are different in colors. The male is light yellow which turns violet as the animal grows up. The female is yellow with black spots. According to WAR, there could be many new species of dragonfly in the wetland area in southern Vietnam. In the coming time, WAR will carry out further research into this species in Vietnam and check all dragonfly taxonomy at the U Minh Thuong National Park. This species had already been spotted in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. Located in An Minh and Vinh Thuan districts, Kien Giang Province, about 365km south-west of Ho Chi Minh City, U Minh Thuong National Park is recognized as one of the three highest priority sites for wetland conservation in the Mekong Delta. Rare scorpion discovered in central Vietnam
Vietnamese and French scientists have announced to discover a new species of scorpion in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in the central province of Quang Binh. The new species of scorpion was found at the Thien Duong (Heaven) Grotto in the national park, said Dr. Pham Dinh Sac from the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources. The discovery was published on the Comptes Rendus Biologies journal. The species is named Thien Duong in Vietnamese and Vietbocap thienduongensis Lourenco & Pham in scientific name. In 2010, Dr. Sac and another scientist discovered another species of scorpion at the Tien Son Grotto, also in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park, which is named Vietbocap canhi Lourenco & Pham. According to Dr. Sac, the two scorpion species belong to the Pseudochactidae family, which is listed as rare animals.
