What Is a Human Interface Device (HID)?

· February 25, 2021 ·

There are a lot of strange terms that come with using a computer. One that you may have seen is “Human Interface Device” or “HID.” It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but what exactly does it mean? “Human Interface Device” may sound strangely alien, but the name is actually very descriptive. Simply put, an HID is a standard for computer devices that are operated by humans. The standard allows these devices to be easily used without any extra software or drivers. A Standard to Simplify Accessories “Human Interface Devices” is a standard that was created to simplify the process of installing input devices. Prior to HID, there were several specific protocols for each type of input device. That meant there was a protocol for mice, a protocol for keyboards, and so on. Devices needed to use the existing protocols or create custom drivers. People had more work to do when installing and configuring devices. In comparison, an HID-compliant device includes “data … [Read more...] about What Is a Human Interface Device (HID)?

Evercade is a promising product with teething issues

· May 15, 2020 ·

Update: we've now completed a full Evercade review if you'd like an in-depth report of the game after testing it out for longer. And if you'd like to check out similar retro throwbacks to gaming's classic years, be sure to take a look at our guide to the best retro consoles . While the recent wave of mini consoles has been a good thing overall, it’s easy to understand why they don’t scratch the itch for everyone. With their fixed software line-ups, the fun inevitably has a limit. What’s more, they can’t offer one important part of the fun of retro gaming – building a collection. Blaze has attempted to fulfil that need with the Evercade, a dedicated retro gaming handheld that runs bespoke compilation cartridges. But does it represent a good way to play these games? Key Details Released : Out Now Price : From £59.99 Publisher : Blaze Players : 1 The device itself is relatively basic, in order to keep costs down. Anxiety Contagion: Tips for Relief

· March 15, 2020 ·

How to achieve calm in a state of panic. Source: Zoffness In the face of COVID-19, we’re seeing a viral spread of anxiety contagion . Panic is as contagious as any pathogen and is dangerous in its own right. Research shows that when we see people panicking – buying up all available water, for example – our brains respond with a similar anxiety spike. We’re built that way because it can be adaptive in certain situations. But it can also be maladaptive . Sustained anxiety is literally bad for your health: The more you panic, the less functional your immune system becomes. The science of anxiety is this: in the face of a real or perceived emergency, your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) kicks on, triggering the release of a stress hormone called cortisol . Over time, cortisol suppresses your immune system, causing a decrease in white blood cells – the cells that help you fight off viruses — putting you at greater risk of infection. The more you panic, the less able … [Read more...] about Anxiety Contagion: Tips for Relief

and the Rise of Gig-Economy Sci-Fi

· January 2, 2021 ·

Ray Tincelli, a good-humored, pot-bellied, middle-aged guy with a “'70s mobster” vibe and money troubles, is looking for a new gig. His day job as a courier for a sketchy lost baggage company isn’t cutting it. Played with hangdog charm by Dean Imperial—he looks like Jeremy Piven gone to seed—Tincelli is a brusque Queens dude who could be imported from any number of prestigious cable dramas. For these reasons and more, he’s the offbeat, magnetic center of Lapsis , the funny and surprisingly humane new science fiction indie from first-time feature director Noah Hutton. The grubby world Ray inhabits looks like ours, but the details are slightly skewed. Ray’s younger half-brother Jamie (Babe Howard), a once-hearty hiker, is now sidelined with a mysterious chronic fatigue syndrome called Omnia. This syndrome is widespread enough that there’s an entire scammy cottage industry around treating it, and Ray is hoping to get his brother into a treatment center. After his courier job is … [Read more...] about and the Rise of Gig-Economy Sci-Fi

Taranaki sport carries on at Covid-19 alert level 2

· February 15, 2021 ·

Taranaki’s sporting fraternity will need to refamiliarise themselves with the alert level 2 restrictions again. It’s the third time the region moved into the alert level, first when it came out of lockdown in May and then in August after an Auckland community outbreak. Under Sport New Zealand guidelines sport and recreation can continue under the current alert level but restrictions will need to be in place. These include contact tracing, sanitisation of hands and equipment, limitations on gatherings and social distancing. While most sport will continue across the province, Tuesday's premier Twenty20 cricket semifinals are postponed. Taranaki Cricket Association operations manager Travis Stewart said the matches will be played next week, but other formats will continue. “Saturday cricket will go ahead as planned unless there is further news from the Government,” he said. Safety restrictions are already in place including umpires not holding caps and no saliva being used … [Read more...] about Taranaki sport carries on at Covid-19 alert level 2
