Almost a million women will enjoy free public transport as part of an attempt to make the Indian capital safer, New Delhi's government said Monday (Jun 3). In the next two-to-three months around 850,000 women will be able to use New Delhi's public transport system for free. (Photo: AFP/Anna Zieminski) The city has been notorious for women's safety since the 2012 gang rape and murder of a female student on a Delhi bus that sparked major protests. The measure will be rolled out in the next two-to-three months for around 850,000 women. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, whose Aam Admi Party (AAP) swept to power in Delhi in 2015 partly on the promise of improved women's safety, said the plan said it would cost about US$115 million a year, but would improve security and cut traffic pollution. The regional government is also looking to install 150,000 CCTV cameras across the capital this year, Kejriwal added. The announcement came months ahead of an election in the so-called … [Read more...] about New Delhi to offer free public transport for 850,000 women

Viet Nam News by Nguyễn Khánh Chi A recent lunch date with my old friends from university turned into a stirring round-table discussion when one friend proposed that we all make a plan to travel together. As we envisioned a change of pace, time together and the chance to explore, everyone seemed excited—but one woman looked a bit concerned. “Does that mean we leave our kids and husband at home?” she asked in a low voice. “Yes!” “Yep!” “Why not?” the others jumped in. Vietnamese traditional family values dating back to the feudal period stipulate that housework is women’s responsibility. This view is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it leads to celebrations of Vietnamese women’s dedication and hard work for their families. On the other, it punishes Vietnamese women who dare to assert some purpose or passion in life outside of their home. The persistence of this view makes it hard for many women to … [Read more...] about Women take a break from family for travel: Why not?
The largest U.S. physician group urged President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday to protect international doctors and seriously ill patients from an executive order that suspends travel from seven Muslim-majority countries. In a letter addressed to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, the American Medical Association warned that the order created barriers to healthcare by preventing international physicians from getting back into the country or obtaining visas. It also wrote that the order should not apply to patients who need timely medical care in the United States. "The AMA is concerned that this executive order is negatively impacting patient access to care and creating unintended consequences for our nation's health care system," the group said in a letter posted on its web site. "It is vitally important that this process not impact patient access to timely medical treatment." Last Friday, Trump put a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the United States and … [Read more...] about Medical group urges protection for doctors, patients after U.S. travel ban
