Compulsory drug detox facilities to be replaced by voluntary treatment Drug addicted people at a rehabilitation centre in Hanoi Compulsory drug detoxification facilities will be gradually closed, to be replaced by voluntary treatment under a plan freshly approved by the Prime Minister. According to the plan, the number of compulsory detox centres will be reduced to 71 as of 2020 with a total capacity of 20,000 patients. Meanwhile, 52 facilities will be converted to offer voluntary detox treatment. At least 30 more detox centres will be set up using private funding, with the aim of raising the combined treatment capacity of all detox centres to 200,000, or 80 percent of the drug addicts on record. The plan also sets the goal of providing 100 percent of staff at detox centres with professional training. Hoi An International Food Festival opens The Hoi An International Food Festival "Taste the World", the first of its kind, opened at An Hoi sculpture garden on March 14, attracting 12 chefs from 12 countries worldwide. During the week-long event, the chefs will demonstrate their cooking skills at 12 local restaurants, namely Cargo club, Morning Glory, Inflame club, Mango I, Mango II, Rice Drum, Seafood Garden, Vinh Hung, Seedlings, Mangorooms, Tam Tam and Hai café. The participating restaurants will be decorated and themed to the countries of the visiting chefs, who will prepare traditional dishes from their respective countries. The festival, a new tourism product of Hoi An in 2016, is expected to bring the local cuisine to countries and territories worldwide, thereby popularising the city, its land and people. 450 bridges to be built in rural areas nationwide As many as 450 bridges will be built in rural areas of 32 northern, central and Central Highland provinces from now to 2020 under a project approved by the Prime Minister on March 12. The bridges, to be built at a total cost of nearly VND324.9 billion (US$15.5 million) sourced from the State budget, will contribute to the socio-economic development of disadvantaged localities and the new-style rural area building programme. Priority will be given to those spanning streams and canals that cross inter-village roads, or roads leading to communal centres, townships, schools and clinics. Germany funds UXO clearance in Thua Thien-Hue The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs will support the central province of Thua Thien-Hue with EUR257,911 (US$359,940) to implement a project to clear unexploded ordnance (UXOs) in A Luoi district. Hanoi to have five public parks of world standards Hanoi will plant one million new trees and build and upgrade 25 public parks, five of which will meet world standards, said Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung at a reception for Danish Ambassador Charlotte Laursen on May 31. At the meeting, Danish Ambassador to Vietnam Charlotte Laursen told Mr Chung about diverse activities in Hanoi to mark the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-Denmark diplomatic ties. She said that in addition to the Danish businesses which are operating in Hanoi many others want to invest in the country in the field of renewable energy, particularly wind energy. For his part, Mr Chung pledged to ensure security and closely work with the Danish embassy to realize the program successfully. Ha Noi hopes to improve street lighting system Over the past two years, Ha Noi’s district authorities have failed to manage the public lighting system in their localities, mainly due to confusion caused by overlaps in responsibility. By far, the most common issue was the excessive length of time it took to replace broken light bulbs, the municipal administration remarked. For instance, in Alley 120 of Hoang Mai District’s Hoang Mai Road, whenever a light bulb malfunctions, it often took 3-5 days or even two weeks after the case was reported to the authorities before the bulb was replaced. Phan Tien Binh, deputy director of the Lighting and Urban Equipment Co Ltd, which is in charge of the bulb replacement, said that when assigned to manage the lighting system, district authorities were too hesitant as they lacked specialised workers. “When residents report a broken light bulb, we must check whether the road is managed by the company or not.
