Racing roundup: NASCAR transition almost complete

· March 1, 2021 ·

William Byron won Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Myatt Snider finished first in the Xfinity Series race at the same place on Saturday and this week’s Sermon, which is pretty heavy on politics (hint: F1 and Saudi Arabia), can be found way down at the bottom of this report. First, the Cup race. The transition of NASCAR drivers from a bunch of good ol’ boys to prep-school graduates was perfectly illustrated on Sunday by Byron’s drive to victory in the No. 24 car made famous by Jeff Gordon, who owns half of this entry. NASCAR used to be the world’s last major racing series where, unlike Formula One or IndyCar or all the various “ladders,” pure, unadulterated talent behind the wheel and the courage to go out there in the first place gave a driver the potential to perhaps land a competitive ride. Jeff Gordon is a perfect example. But the days are gone when guys like Alan Kulwicki or Geoff and Brett Bodine could wrench and then race their own stock car or NASCAR … [Read more...] about Racing roundup: NASCAR transition almost complete

R-Type Final retrospective

· June 16, 2013 ·

The R-Type series needs little introduction. From its stunning arcade debut in 1987, R-Type captured the hearts and minds of a generation by combining novel mechanics with a distinctive Giger-inspired biomechanical aesthetic. A grand sense of spectacle was matched by a challenge equally imposing, and although reliant on the learn-by-rote methodology that underpinned all shmups of the day, Irem's craftsmanship created a horizontal journey with a unique imagination. 26 years later, R-Type's Force and charge shot still feels like a genius twist on the genre's norms. Bolstered by its uniqueness and wild success, the R-Type concept blossomed into a fine run of sequels. With the 1998 release of R-Type Delta, the series marked its first decade with a bravura entry that demonstrated precisely why true icons are timeless, proving that its template could sing in polygons just as well as it could in bitmaps. However, all good things must come to an end. In a unique and emotionally affecting … [Read more...] about R-Type Final retrospective

Crown Prince Salman’s English Teacher Reveals What MBS Was Like as a Child

· December 9, 2018 ·

The young MBS was a spoiled child and a bit of a class clown, his former English teacher has revealed. In an article for the BBC, Rachid Sekkai, a former schoolteacher, who is now a journalist for the BBC's Arabic Service, recalled that he was called on by then-Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, MBS's father, to teach the boy and his brothers English in 1996 while Salman was governor of Riyadh and MBS was just 11 years old. "Mohammed…seemed more interested in spending time with palace guards instead of following my lessons. As the oldest of his siblings, he seemed to be allowed to do as he pleased," Sekkai wrote. © Flickr / Jason Howie Israeli Government Okayed Spyware Sale to Saudis to Track Khashoggi - Reports Teaching MBS's siblings, Sekkai noted that his ability to command their attention "would last only until Mohammed would turn up," with the future crown prince using a walkie-talkie borrowed from one of the palace guards "to make cheeky remarks … [Read more...] about Crown Prince Salman’s English Teacher Reveals What MBS Was Like as a Child

UEFA suspends Champions League, Europa League until further notice

· April 1, 2020 ·

REUTERS: UEFA bowed to the inevitable on Wednesday and suspended all Champions League and Europa League soccer matches "until further notice" due to the coronavirus pandemic. European soccer's governing body also said all national team games scheduled for June have been postponed, including playoff matches for Euro 2020, which has been moved to 2021. The finals of Europe's elite Champions League competition, second-tier Europa League and Women's Champions League, all of which were scheduled for May, had already been postponed. While most leagues in Europe hope to finish their domestic seasons once restrictions on movement and social contact are lifted, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said last week the season could be lost if play does not start by the end of June. Wednesday's video conference call of UEFA's 55 member associations included a broad ranging discussion on the crisis and what options might face the game in the coming weeks. A source, who was part of the call, … [Read more...] about UEFA suspends Champions League, Europa League until further notice

Piano mastery comes early for blind girl

· March 2, 2021 ·

Chen Lin loves the piano, having developed an unusually fine sense of hearing and concentration — abilities that have served her well as she has learned to play. She touches the hearts of many. Chen Lin is blind. Born in Shantou, Guangdong province in 2010, Chen is "different". She suffers from a rare congenital condition that took her eyesight at birth. Her experiences growing up were unlike other children. Yet, despite her disability, Chen refuses to bow to fate. It was music that opened her world. While Chen can't see, her other senses are sharper than those of ordinary people. With her excellent perception and diligent practice, she developed quickly on the piano and began to perform on stage after only one year. After two years, she started winning international prizes. She won the classical performance award in the finals of the Antonio Vivaldi Art Festival in Vienna, Austria, when she was just 9 years old. In May, she won first prize in her group for a solo in the … [Read more...] about Piano mastery comes early for blind girl
