Donald Trump’s spokeswoman Sarah Sanders defended the president Sunday against accusations that he was inciting violence toward a Muslim congresswoman after he tweeted a video of her spliced with footage of the 9/11 attacks. The White House’s decision to double down on Ilhan Omar came as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the country’s most powerful Democrat, said she had spoken to authorities about her colleague’s safety and urged Trump to delete the clip. Omar has been at the center of an escalating row after a clip emerged of her characterizing the deadliest attack on US soil as “some people did something.” On Friday, Trump tweeted a video that juxtaposed the snippet, which Omar’s fellow Democrats say was taken out of context, with images of the hijacked planes used in the attacks crashing into the Twin Towers that once dominated New York’s skyline. Menacing music accompanies Omar’s words. The clip, which had been viewed more than … [Read more...] about White House denies Trump inciting violence against Muslim lawmaker
Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke is calling for the federal legalization of cannabis and clemency for those serving prison time for marijuana offenses. The former Texas congressman, who is scheduled to make a campaign stop Thursday morning at an Oakland cannabis dispensary, wants to give “drug war justice grants” to people who were incarcerated for nonviolent federal and state drug offenses. The grants would be funded by a federal tax on marijuana businesses. O’Rourke also proposed allowing marijuana businesses to use banks to conduct transactions. Most financial institutions refuse to deal with cannabis businesses because the federal government still classifies marijuana as an illegal drug on the same level as heroin. “We need to not only end the prohibition on marijuana, but also repair the damage done to the communities of color disproportionately locked up in our criminal justice system or locked out of opportunity because of the war on … [Read more...] about Beto O’Rourke wants to legalize marijuana and help those hurt by drug war
The Bolsonaros are known as Trumps of the Tropics. And given how deeply popular Donald Trump is in his own mind, he obviously resents the comparison. Indeed, when asked a specific question over the similarities between the Presidents of Brazil and the US, then White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “There is only one Donald Trump.” Third time lucky Michelle Bolsonaro and Melania Trump are both First Ladies. But even more interestingly, both are the third wives of Jair and Donald respectively. Nepotism rocks Jair and Donald have both been criticised for nepotism in office. While the former handed out-of-turn promotions to Michelle and tripled her salary — it prompted the Supreme Court to do a ‘Captain Obvious’ rendition and say nepotism is illegal — Donald has also promoted daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner to key positions. Presidential race But the most troubling aspect of their similarities lies in their racist … [Read more...] about Racist remarks, third wives: Many similarities between Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro
The Green New Dealers have taken Rahm Emanuel’s advice to heart: “Never let a crisis go to waste.” That is, use the occasion of a crisis to advance a pre-existing agenda, in this case, the remaking of the U.S. economy. Of course, they first had to manufacture — or, if one prefers, dramatically highlight — the crisis of climate change. And that’s a mission accomplished, at least as far as the left is concerned; a recent helpful headline from The Washington Post reads, “Americans increasingly see climate change as a crisis, poll shows.”Indeed, all the Democratic presidential hopefuls have signed on to some version of the Green New Deal; campaign pledges range from Joe Biden’s $1.7 trillion to Bernie Sanders’ $16.3 trillion. So we can see: Following their Emanuel-esque logic, the Green New Dealers have moved the Overton Window on spending and regulating.
