When Alec Waugh moved into Oakwoods village at Richmond in 2018, he was surprised to find that neither Spark nor Vodafone offered fibre connections for residential customers in the expanding urban area near Nelson. Now, almost three years on, with a new retirement village partially built nearby along with many new homes and land secured for a potential new primary school , Waugh is frustrated he and other residents in the fast-growing Richmond West development area can't choose either of the two big telcos as providers of their fibre broadband. “It’s not like we’re living in the sticks,” Waugh said. “I find it mind-boggling to be quite honest.” Network Tasman Fibre, which is owned and operated by Network Tasman Ltd, has installed a fibre optic network in the area. If you’re working from home, you’re going to need tools to make your place feel more like an office. It’s easy to lose focus if you don’t create the right work space. For Shirley Lam, the founder and owner of the pet lifestyle site, Perro & Me , it’s all about building a little bit of structure. Lam, who runs the thriving online business out of her house in Vancouver, says it’s important to get in the mindset that you’re going to work. “Set your daily schedule in your calendar and stick to it as you would at the office,” she says. “And get dressed for work — do your hair, put on makeup and look office-appropriate, even if it’s just your home office.” Another tip: “Set up a dedicated spot as your work space so that you can take breaks and walk away from it,” Lam … [Read more...] about 13 Accessories to Help You Stay Focused and Productive If You’re Working From Home
I signed up for T-Mobile’s $50 unlimited home internet service. Here’s what happened
I don't know what you're paying for home internet service, but I'll wager it's more than you'd like it to be -- and probably inching up all the time. For example, Comcast charges me $106 a month just for internet (I ditched TV about a year ago), a rate that seems to increase a few bucks every couple months. So when I learned that T-Mobile Home Internet was available in my area, promising unlimited high-speed service for a flat $50 monthly -- equipment, taxes and fees included -- I jumped at the chance to try it. (Note that availability is limited for the time being; the service is slowly rolling out to cities across the US and is technically in a pilot phase right now. That means things could change when there's an official rollout.) See it at T-Mobile Obviously, I had concerns. Would it be fast enough for everyday computing? Could it handle 4K streaming video? Would it work with my mesh network and support the many, many connected devices in my house? Perhaps … [Read more...] about I signed up for T-Mobile’s $50 unlimited home internet service. So Long, Fry’s. I Learned Everything About Gadgets From You
For the umpteenth time in the past year, a wave of sadness hangs over my family’s group chat. This time it’s not about a fraught election or the woes of the ongoing pandemic. It’s because Fry’s Electronics, the West Coast’s premier suburban electronics superstore, has announced it will soon close all of its locations. I took the news hard, as if a major chapter of my life had latched shut. But when I tried to process my grief out loud with my fiancée, I was met by deaf ears. “It’s just a stupid electronics store,” she said, sauntering to the kitchen for a morning cup of coffee. “Why does anyone even care!?” I was taken aback. How could anyone not care? Fry’s was the magical electronics emporium where so many of us bought our first CD burners, flatscreen monitors, cordless vacuums, wireless printers, or ATI Radeon 9800 graphics cards. Fry's also, quite famously, sold more than just electronics. You could find bone-handled pocket knives there alongside bins full of DVDs … [Read more...] about So Long, Fry’s.
