Heir unapparent: If North Korea faces succession, who might replace Kim Jong Un?

· April 26, 2020 ·

SEOUL: North Korea has never announced who would follow leader Kim Jong Un in the event he is incapacitated, and with no details known about his young children, analysts say his sister and loyalists could form a regency until a successor is old enough to take over. South Korean and Chinese officials have publicly cast doubt on reports that Kim was gravely ill following a cardiovascular procedure, after his absence from a key state anniversary event on Apr 15 triggered speculation about his health. But the media reports sparked questions about who is in place to take over if Kim, thought to be about 36, a third-generation hereditary leader, fell seriously ill or died. He became leader when his father Kim Jong Il died in 2011 from a heart attack. Each change at the top in North Korea has raised the prospect of a leadership vacuum or collapse of the Kim dynasty, which has ruled the country since its founding in 1948. So far, each of the three Kims to rule North Korea has defied … [Read more...] about Heir unapparent: If North Korea faces succession, who might replace Kim Jong Un?

AB InBev begins search to replace long-time CEO Brito: Report

· September 8, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Budweiser beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev has began a search for a replacement for its long-serving chief executive Carlos Brito, the Financial Times reported on Monday. The world's biggest brewer is considering external candidates to replace Brito, who has been its CEO for 16 years and has overseen a string of mergers that transformed two Brazilian and Belgium drink makers into a global giant, the FT reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter. AB InBev declined to comment on the FT report, which also said that the company is currently considering only one internal candidate, Michel Doukeris, who heads its North America-based Anheuser-Busch business, citing the same sources. Brito is involved with the board in the process and plans to step down at some point next year, the FT said, citing one person. It is also possible that Brito remains in charge for longer if a replacement is not found, it said, added that Brito was expected to join AB InBev's board after … [Read more...] about AB InBev begins search to replace long-time CEO Brito: Report

Would you pay S$40 a month for an invitation-only email service?

· July 9, 2019 ·

The year is 2019, and the brainy engineers of Silicon Valley are hunkered down, working on transformative, next-generation technologies like self-driving cars, digital currencies and quantum computing. Meanwhile, the buzziest startup in San Francisco is … an expensive email app? A few months ago, I started hearing about something called Superhuman . It’s an invitation-only service that costs US$30 (S$40) a month and promises “the fastest email experience ever made.” Marc Andreessen, the influential venture capitalist, reportedly swore by it, as did tech bigwigs like Patrick and John Collison, founders of Stripe . The app was rumoured to have a waiting list of more than 100,000 people. “We have the who’s who of Silicon Valley at this point,” Superhuman’s founder, Rahul Vohra, told me in an interview. The waiting list is actually 180,000 people long, he said, and some people are getting desperate. He showed me a photo of a gluten-free cake sent to Superhuman’s office by a … [Read more...] about Would you pay S$40 a month for an invitation-only email service?
