CANBERRA: Twice-impeached former US President Donald Trump has evaded conviction once more. The Senate verdict is in. Voting guilty: 57 senators - representing nearly 70 per cent of the country or 202 million people, and the majority public opinion on the issue of conviction. Voting not guilty: 43 Senators. In American math, that is an acquittal, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict. Moments after the vote, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell called Trump’s actions before the attack “a disgraceful dereliction of duty” and confirmed the former president was “practically and morally” responsible for provoking the events on Jan 6 whereby “criminals were carrying his banners” lay siege to the Capitol. Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has said Donald Trump 's speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) will mark the start of planning for the "next administration" following a phone call with the ex-president. Appearing on Fox News Thursday, Meadows said Trump's CPAC 2021 speech would set out "what the future may look like," adding he'd had a lengthy chat with the ex-commander-in-chief about the America First agenda. Disgraced former president Donald Trump is set to give his first post-White House speech at a right-wing summit. It comes amid speculation that the 74-year-old "train wreck", one of the worst presidents in US history, could hint at or even announce that he will try to run again in 2024. The property tycoon, who courted white supremacists and far-right extremists and incited sickening acts of violence during his lone term in Washington, was dubbed the "loser of the year" after Joe Biden defeated him in last November's vote.
