In the small hours of last Saturday morning, a phone call awoke the weary staff at Saigon’s 115 Emergency Center. A 92-year-old lady with diabetes had been found unconscious in her home, and her family were in urgent need of help. Without missing a beat, three doctors scrambled to the ambulance outside with defibrillators, electrocardiographs and a case full of medicine. The ambulance screeched into life and was soon on the main road just as dawn broke. The lady’s home was tucked down a busy alley off Ta Uyen Street in District 5. Upon arrival, the medics darted towards the house, equipment in hand. A quick diagnosis revealed their patient had fallen unconscious due to low blood sugar levels. After a shot of glucose, she regained consciousness and was taken to hospital for further check-ups. HCM City (VNA) - Vietnam accounts for 87 of the 163 new species of animals and plants discovered in the Greater Mekong region, according to a report released early this week by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).A new frog measuring less than 3cm long, which took 10 years to be confirmed as a new species, a rainbow-headed snake, a dragon-like lizard and a newt that looks like a “Klingon from the movie Star Trek” are four of the 163 species discovered. The report, titled Species Oddity, documents the work of hundreds of scientists who discovered nine amphibians, 11 fish, 14 reptiles, 126 plants and three mammals in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Hanoi (VNA) - Chefs Nik Michael Imran and Sarah Benjamin have come to Vietnam as part of the Asian Food Channel hit Cooking for Love’s second season. The series will follow Imran and Benjamin as they pit their kitchen skills and creativity to outdo each other and bring six new families together over the joy of food. With each episode capturing a family’s unique story, the competitive duo not only try to challenge each other but also themselves as they draw culinary inspiration from each personalised story and create their final dishes. They started the trip to Vietnam on October 31 to exchange with Vietnamese chefs and learn about the local cuisine. This is the first time Imran has travelled to Vietnam while for Benjamin, it’s the second one. Episode 4, entitled The Unsung Hero, focuses on Vietnamese food. Vietnamese AO delegation visits the RoK A delegation from the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA) met with members of the Korean Victims of Agent Orange Veterans Association (KAOVA) in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, on June 6. VAVA’s President, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh, underlined the friendly cooperative relationship the KAOVA and VAVA have enjoyed over the years. Founded in 2007, KAOVA has constantly liaised with VAVA to give their support to Vietnamese AO victims, he said Their help is very significant to Vietnamese AO victims as it reflects the friendship and solidarity that exists between both peoples, especially during Vietnam-RoK Friendship Year 2012 and the 20 th anniversary of their diplomatic ties (1992-2012), he noted.
