It would be cruel to describe the front row of a fashion show – where the most senior members of the fashion press are hierarchically seated – as resembling the bar scene in Star Wars, populated by creatures, good and evil, who seem not of this world. But it would be fair to say it’s hard to imagine the majority of them thriving in any other arena than fashion. I helped to cover fashion shows for the Guardian for a decade and, among her peacock-like colleagues, it was Shulman, as self-contained as a French hen, who intrigued me the most. While she is certainly in the fashion world, she never looks entirely of it, and I always found it easy to imagine her doing something entirely different: writing novels, say, out of her home in north London – which, in fact, she has since done (her second novel was published last year). The template for a fashion magazine … [Read more...] about Inside Vogue by Alexandra Shulman review – pleasingly blunt and self-aware

At first glance at this car , you’d be forgiven for mistaking it as a vehicle from a science fiction blockbuster. But the futuristic pickup truck is very much real, and was unveiled by Tesla at an event last night. Dubbed the ‘Cyber Truck’, the car features a strange angular body in gunmetal grey, and looks more like an armoured vehicle than a pickup truck. The car has a starting price of $39,000 (£30,000), which is actually less expensive than initially expected. At the launch event in Los Angeles, Elon Musk , Tesla’s CEO, said that other other versions will be priced at $49,900 (£38,632) and $69,900 (£54,116) with the most expensive offering a range of more than 500 miles. Musk said: “We need sustainable energy now. If we don't have a pickup truck, we can't solve it. “The top three selling vehicles in America are pickup trucks. To solve sustainable energy, we have to have a pickup truck.” The truck's hulking sharp … [Read more...] about Tesla unveils futuristic pickup truck – but unimpressed fans claim it ‘must be a joke’
