The Egyptian tourism sector is poised to experience a rebound, despite challenges, leading to a more positive outlook in the near to medium terms, according to Oxford Business Group (OBG)’s Egypt economic update issued on Monday. OBG associated the recovery to the recent uptick in foreign arrivals, as well as the expected boost from the resumption of direct flights to and from Russia, one of Egypt’s major sources of international visitors. Egypt Air and the Russian Aeroflot announced, in March, that flights between Moscow and Cairo would recommence on 12 and 11 April respectively. The resumption will end the two and a half years of flight suspensions between the two countries following the downing of a Russian Metrojet plane over the Sinai Peninsula in October 2015. Somkid Jatusripitak, deputy prime minister, said the Cabinet agreed on the plan for tourism development in the west coast to boost community economic development and upgrade tourism to the global stage. “Thailand Riviera” will cover the west coast from Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon to Ranong province. The Tourism Authority of Thailand will set aside part of its budget for the high-end project which will be forwarded to National Tourism Policy Committee on March 12. As a means to support the project, the Ministry of Transport will soon complete bidding document for the high-speed train project, Bangkok-Hua Hin, which will be forwarded to the Cabinet for approval. Once the high-speed train project is materialised, real estate development will follow, leading to urban and community developments. A Barbadian blockchain technology company is set to play a key role in helping the region’s tourism industry track visitor spend and improve competitiveness. The Hastings, Christ Church-based Bitt, which describes itself as the first to bring cryptocurrency exchange to the Caribbean, this morning signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Barbados headquartered Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), aimed at facilitating the implementation of more efficient payment processes for tourism-related products and services. CTO General Secretary Hugh Riley said the tourism development agency was keen on embracing new technology to help boost the sector and answer a number of questions, especially relating to tourism spend. Colombia needs a tourism ministry to take full advantage of the growing number of foreign visitors, representatives from the industry say. During the past seven years, the number of international visitors has increased by 150%, according to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism with a record number of 6.5 million tourists recorded last year. Leading representatives from the industry believe that an autonomous ministry, distinct to that of commerce and industry is required to take full advantage of Colombia’s increasing popularity as a tourist hotspot in the future. “In the coming years we will have more tourism and we need more support.
