Mumbai: The spat over running of special trains to transport migrants is the latest of incidents that have bared the differences and lack of coordination between the Centre and the Maharashtra government amid the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Leaders of the ruling Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress coalition and government officials in the state have accused the central government of sitting on their demands or ignoring those, hurting the efforts of Maharashtra, specifically that of Mumbai, to tackle the pandemic. NCP leader Sharad Pawar had to step in more than once to liaise with New Delhi, after chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and his cabinet colleagues did not get a positive response. It appears that it is insufficient to appeal to virtuous and altruistic behavior by health care providers. It requires the state and the community to somehow assure such persons that their loved ones will be cared for if they were to be required to step out in extraordinary times and be available for work that only they are trained to provide. In that circumstance expecting an ethic of having a duty to serve would be credible. As a matter of policy then we have a duty to do much more than we currently do.
