Megastar cinemas renamed CGV All Megastar cinemas have been renamed CGV as of Wednesday, January 15, announced the CJ CGV Group of South Korea, the new manager of Viet Nam's biggest cinema chain. CGV cinemas will also be installed with 4DX, a motion picture technology that provides a four-dimensional cinematic experience. CGV cinemas in Ha Noi and HCM City will be the first to offer the group's latest technology. A joint venture between Vietnamese and foreign investors, MegaStar had opened its first cinemas in the two largest cities of the country in 2007. Since then, the number of cinema complexes has jumped to 13 in seven cities and provinces nation-wide, claiming more than 50 per cent of the market share. According to the group's CEO Seo Jung, CGV Viet Nam aims to maintain its market share and entertain audiences in Viet Nam with new and interesting experiences. Vietnamese sailors escape from Somali pirates Five Vietnamese sailors were among the crewmen of a fishing vessel of Taiwan, China, who escaped from Somali pirates after it was hijacked in the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Seychelles, the Taiwan External Affairs Department said on November 6. The Chin Yi Wen with a crew of 28, including nine Chinese, eight Filipinos, six Indonesians and five Vietnamese, was attacked on November 4. According to a spokesman for Taiwan's Fisheries Agency, the crew managed to overwhelm the six armed pirates and retake control of their ship. This is the first time sailors of a fishing vessel hijacked by Somali pirates have freed themselves on their own, he said. The Somali pirates fell into the sea and three sailors on the Chin Yi Wen were slightly injured, he added. The ship is heading for Victoria port of the Seychelles. Human traffickers jailed for 80 years The People's Court in the southern Tay Ninh province yesterday sentenced 23 defendants to 80 years in jail for human trafficking, illegal money lending and fraud with the intent to appropriate property. The harshest sentence, 12 years and six months in jail, was given to Nguyen Truong Son, 39, the head of the ring, from Tay Ninh Province. His wife, Tran Thi Co, 34, was given a four-year jail sentence. The indictment by the provincial People's Procurary said the couple, along with other members of the gang, cheated and forced some 40 women to work at a karaoke bar. They also lent money to these women as monthly stipends at very high interest rates. The couple is believed to have earned more than VND1.2 billion (US$56,000) from such illegal money lending. In addition to being loan sharks, the couple also confessed that they had trafficked 20 women.
