The Met Office has extended a 'danger to life' warning for a third day, expanding it to a wider area south of the UK as high winds usher in the arrival of ferocious Storm Atiyah. The yellow severe weather warning for today and tomorrow has now been extended for a third day. Manchester has now no longer included in the warning, which now covers more of Wales as the high gusts are forecast to hit further south-east. The wind warning is now in force overnight, from 6pm today until 9am tomorrow as the national forecaster warns Brits to expect disruption to travel and huge waves for coastal communities. A fresh yellow warning will also cover Scotland on Tuesday, as forecasts predict heavy rain. The Met Office had earlier issued two separate 18-hour yellow weather warnings for wind today and tomorrow, bringing strong gales in the south-west region. Coastal regions covering Wales, south-west England and north-wet England are expected to see large waves up to 40ft offshore, whereas Scotland's … [Read more...] about UK weather forecast: Met Office extends ‘danger to life’ warning for powerful winds

Daily Mail publisher: cap media groups’ share of news provision
The publisher of the Daily Mail has called for a cap limiting the amount of UK news provision any one organisation can have control over providing across TV, newspapers and the internet – but says the BBC should be excluded from this media plurality regulatory regime because of its "special status". Daily Mail & General Trust has recommended that a hard "cross-media cap" be introduced governing the provision of news to "ensure that no single 'voice' becomes dominant in the UK media", in its submission to Ofcom's consultation on media plurality. The publisher is calling for a two-pronged approach to regulating plurality in the provision of news in the UK. DMGT proposes introducing a cap on the share of news each organisation controls, which would be policed by developing a test that would evaluate news minutage as a standard measurement across all media consumption. "This has the merit of sufficient simplicity such that it can be understood and applied readily, without the … [Read more...] about Daily Mail publisher: cap media groups’ share of news provision

Dialogue must start over Ukraine
Sergei Lavrov's article (It's not Russia that is destabilising Ukraine, 8 April) is a masterpiece of half-truths and disinformation which shows that destabilisation doesn't always need troops and tanks. The ousted, corrupt Yanukovych government brought Ukraine to its knees economically and administratively. Lavrov is right on one point: it will take years to make Ukraine a well-run and stable democracy. That task will be made much harder by a Kremlin prepared to destabilise the situation still further, and justify its actions with the mantra of protection of Russian speakers without any regard for the truth. Lavrov ought to read the latest poll by the International Republican Institute with Gallup. Two-thirds of ethnic Russians in Ukraine do not perceive any threat because of language or ethnicity; more than 80% of Ukrainians do not support Russia sending in its army to protect Russian speakers (and that includes two-thirds of respondents in the south and east), while three-quarters … [Read more...] about Dialogue must start over Ukraine
