Hougang United Football Club employee jailed for embezzling S$278,200

· July 30, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: An employee at Hougang United Football Club was sentenced to two years' jail on Tuesday (Jul 30) for embezzling S$278,200 from the club in less than two weeks. Malaysian national Tean Tai Tee, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal breach of trust by dishonest appropriation. She had taken the cash between Nov 29 and Dec 11 last year from the safe boxes at the club's office and clubhouse, where she worked as an account and administrative assistant. Hougang United's clubhouse was at Hougang Stadium. Tean was in charge of accounting for the money kept in the club's safes and also issued cash floats for the jackpot machines at the club. She had access to keys for both safes, which contained the football club's sales revenue and earnings before they were deposited in the bank, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Yanying. The court heard that Tean had taken the money in order to pay a man known only as "Steven" in hopes of resolving a police case she became … [Read more...] about Hougang United Football Club employee jailed for embezzling S$278,200

Football: Neymar wants Barcelona return, says club’s vice-president

· June 27, 2019 ·

BARCELONA: Brazilian superstar Neymar wants to return to Barcelona two years after quitting the club to join Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona's vice-president said Thursday (Jun 27). "What is correct, at the current time, what I have read, what I have heard, which seems exact, is that Neymar wants to come back to Barcelona," Jordi Cardoner told a press conference at the Camp Nou. He added that Barcelona had had no contact so far with the world's most expensive footballer who joined the French champions for €222 million (US$252 million). For the moment the club acknowledged Neymar's interest in returning to Barcelona but said there was no recruitment effort on their part to resign him. "To say that Barça is working on recruiting Neymar, that is something I cannot agree with," Cardoner said. "For the moment all that is happening - and not only with Neymar - is that a number of players would like to play for a great club like Barcelona. We will see what happens in timely … [Read more...] about Football: Neymar wants Barcelona return, says club’s vice-president

Oprah Winfrey on Monday (Sep 23) announced the top pick of her recast popular book club, choosing The Water Dancer by critically acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, his debut novel about slavery. Coates, who joined Winfrey in the CBS television segment, said being picked for the media mogul's king-maker book club was a "tremendous, tremendous honour. "This is like a huge honour for me," said Coates, whose many literature prizes include the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction for Between The World And Me." He said he started writing the novel long before his now-famous non-fiction book, continually returning over the years to recasting and editing the novel, which goes on sale on Tuesday. Madonna’s concert promoter hits back at claims of poor ticket sales

· June 14, 2019 ·

Madonna's concert promoter Live Nation has come out to rubbish the claims that the singer is struggling to fill the small theatre venues for her upcoming concert tour for her new album, Madame X. The New York Post ran a story that said: “Four years ago, Madonna was selling out shows at Madison Square Garden. Now, she’s struggling to sell out the BAM opera house in Brooklyn.” The proof, according to the story, was that hundreds of seats were still available for venues that can only hold a few thousand people each, and this was after tickets had been on sale for a month. Live Nation’s chairman of global music has called the claims “absolute lies” in an interview with live music trade publication, Pollstar. “There’s something really amiss there. If you go back in history, each of her last four tours, they’ve gone on full attack mode on Madonna,” said Arthur Fogel. Fogel clarified that additional tickets had just gone on sale after the system had weeded out scalpers and scammers. … [Read more...] about Madonna’s concert promoter hits back at claims of poor ticket sales

Tennis: Kyrgios fined US$113,000 for Cincinnati meltdown, faces suspension

· August 16, 2019 ·

CINCINNATI: Controversial Australian star Nick Kyrgios was on Thursday (Aug 15) fined US$113,000 (€101,701) after his explosive Cincinnati Masters meltdown which saw him smash two racquets, launch an abusive tirade at the chair umpire before appearing to spit at the official. The ATP said the massive sanction included individual fines for ball abuse, leaving the court without permission, an audible obscenity and unsportsmanlike conduct during his second round loss to Russia's Karen Khachanov. Kyrgios, 24, was warned that he could also face another suspension from the sport once a full investigation has taken place. After the world number 27 lost 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to Khachanov on Wednesday night, he called umpire Fergus Murphy a "f***in' (expletives) tool", refused to shake his hand while spitting in the direction of the chair. He had earlier been handed a time violation, docked a point and was warned again after leaving the court without permission at the end of the … [Read more...] about Tennis: Kyrgios fined US$113,000 for Cincinnati meltdown, faces suspension
