L egendary actor Shammi Kapoor, who was on dialysis for quite some time before his death, had said he was tired and that he could not take it anymore, Amitabh Bachchan reminisced. "He had got tired during the last 2 days. Never one to give up, he spoke for the first time in a tone that conveyed that he had had enough, to Jaya a few days ago. 'I am tired, I can't take it anymore' he lamented, with choked emotion. Morning at 5:15 he gave himself up to the heavens!," Bachchan wrote on his blog. It was Bachchan's daughter Shweta, who informed him of Shammi's death, after which he drove immediately to the actor's residence. "It's always that dreaded moment in the early hours or deep in the night when that phone call comes and bears the news of a crisis. Shweta, walked into my room gingerly and in the dark spoke up softly - 'Papa! Shammi uncle passed away just now! I sat up. The first words that come to your mouth are...Oh! God!...and then everything else takes over," Bachchan said. … [Read more...] about ‘Shammi

Small, silent robot cleaner
For a robot vacuum cleaner, the latest LG Hom-Bot (model VR66900TWA) is surprisingly chatty. It issued a warning - in a female voice - when one of its two side brushes became entangled in the net of my children's toy goal post. It also informed me when its battery was low. However, I was often unable to hear what it was saying because of the din from the suction motor or simply because I was too far away. To be fair, the Hom-Bot is one of the quietest robot vacuum cleaners I have tried. LG says it produces a noise level of around 64 decibels or slightly louder than a normal conversation. Because I am used to noisy vacuum cleaners, its relatively silent operation made me doubt its cleaning efficacy. It is probably for people like me, as well as those who have a very dusty home, that LG has included a Turbo mode. This mode, which is automatically activated when cleaning carpets, bumps up the speed of the suction (and the noise level) for a more thorough cleaning. However, it … [Read more...] about Small, silent robot cleaner

10 years on, no peace after war in Syria
Ten years on, the fighting in Syria may have tapered off but the suffering has not. BEIRUT: After a decade of unfathomable violence and human tragedy that has made Syria the defining war of the early 21st century, the fighting has tapered off but the suffering hasn't. In 2011, Bashar al-Assad and his government briefly looked like another domino about to fall in the whirlwind of pro-democracy revolts sweeping the Middle East. Ten years later, Assad is still there, a pyrrhic victor offering no credible prospects of reconciliation for the Syrian people and exercising limited sovereignty over a land left prey to foreign powers. In late January 2011, the uprisings that toppled dictators in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya became known as the "Arab Spring" and the contagious nature of the region's revolts became obvious. It took time for the wave of protests to take hold in Syria, where demonstrations had been banned for half a century and the government seemed more entrenched than … [Read more...] about 10 years on, no peace after war in Syria
