ROME: Italy on Wednesday (Mar 11) shut all stores except for pharmacies and food shops in a desperate bid to halt the spread of a coronavirus that has killed 827 in the country in just over two weeks. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced the latest wave of restrictions in a dramatic appeal to the nation that came with the country of 60 million battling its biggest crisis in generations. "Thank you to all Italians who make sacrifices. We are proving to be a great nation," Conte said in his nine-minute evening prime time address to the nation. Italians have watched ever tighter restrictions slowly eat away at the very fabric of everyday life. An existing clampdown on public gathering and basic travel had already emptied streets and shuttered everything from churches to restaurants. AFP photographers spotted masked sanitation workers in white nylon suits and rubber gloves spraying Florence's deserted Saint Mark's Square with disinfectant through a long hose. … [Read more...] about Italy shuts stores across country to fight coronavirus

advertisement advertisement advertisement This winter, experts are bracing for a double whammy of pandemic-related mental health struggles. advertisement advertisement According to studies, depression symptoms are about three times more prevalent than they were before the pandemic, and mental health experts fear that pandemic depression will be amplfied by seasonal depression. With colder weather driving people indoors , even those who don’t normally live with seasonal affective disorder are struggling with their mental health. As coronavirus explodes, world races to mask up
ZURICH: Spiez Lab, a government-run institute in the Swiss mountains, was set up to protect the nation from nuclear, biological and chemical threats. "For a world without weapons of mass destruction," runs its slogan. It is now fighting another global menace - the coronavirus - by providing face masks, the demand for which is growing faster than the disease they're meant to fend off. Hospitals treating COVID-19, the pandemic caused by the virus, can need up to nine times the protective equipment they do when dealing with normal flu, according to the American Hospital Association. READ: Millions of masks stockpiled in Canada's Ontario expired before coronavirus hit The Swiss lab acquires masks that are past their expiry dates, then tests them to see if they still work. "If yes, they're being distributed to the health care system via military pharmacies," said spokesman Andreas Bucher. So far, he said, Spiez Lab has distributed 10.2 million masks. Coronavirus wreaks havoc on luxury groups amid fashion weeks in Europe
The coronavirus outbreak has kept as many as 1,000 Chinese fashion buyers from Europe’s top fashion shows this month as the luxury industry faces its biggest threat since the 2008 financial crisis. China has become all-important to the global luxury and fashion industries as a driver of sales and a core manufacturing hub. Chinese consumers accounted for roughly 40 per cent of the €281 billion (S$426.3 billion) spent on luxury goods globally last year, according to Jefferies, but drove 80 per cent of the growth, powering sales increases at companies such as LVMH and Kering . The outbreak has also started to disrupt supply chains for more mid-market apparel, with retailers and fashion brands expressing concern about whether Chinese factories will be able to deliver autumn-winter collections as planned. Companies such as LVMH, Kering and Richemont are less vulnerable because they are not as reliant on China for manufacturing as those apparel makers, or industries that … [Read more...] about Coronavirus wreaks havoc on luxury groups amid fashion weeks in Europe
Base Camp: 2021 Toyota Prius
Every week, wheels.ca selects a new vehicle on sale in Canada and takes a good look at its entry-level trim. If we find it worthy of your consideration, we’ll let you know. If not, we’ll recommend one that earns a passing grade. Few names in the automotive sphere are as recognized as Prius. The model showed up over twenty years ago, taking the competition to school in terms of providing a reliable yet fuel-efficient hybrid car. It’s gone through a few permutations since then — including a stint where it looked like an unfinished science project — and now takes a regular seat at the segment’s head table. For 2021, Toyota offers four different trims of Prius, including the base model shown here. It’s powered by a gasoline-fuelled 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Together, they make 121 horsepower while running on gas, electricity, or a combination of both depending on driving conditions. The transition between modes is smooth, by the way, and requires no … [Read more...] about Base Camp: 2021 Toyota Prius
